Motamed Field at Adelphi University – A cold, blustery day couldn’t stop the FPSC Braves from having a fun-filled afternoon creating memories and playing the beautiful game in the Adelphi University Pre Season Soccer Tournament on March 18, 2018.
The Braves were placed in a very competitive division and were able to come away with two victories out of three against Auburndale Soccer Club, Gold Coast FC Tottenham, and Gold Coast FC West Ham.
In game one two goals would be all the Braves would need, as the Braves would defeat the Auburndale Soccer Club 2-0 behind a stifling defense. The center of the defense was led by Giuliana
Wingers Christina Vargas, who scored both goals, Bridgette Gayron and Kayla Connolly created constant chaos for the opposing defense by driving down the sidelines and either playing balls to the middle to create chances or taking passes and slashing to the goal mouth themselves.
The second game of the day versus Gold Coast Tottenham would see the Braves suffer a 1-0 defeat. In a hard-fought match the Braves would be downed by a free kick awarded to the opposing team just outside the goal box late in the game. The Braves were resilient though as they mounted a furious attack with time dwindling on the Gold Coast goal that would have leveled the score and obtained a draw for the Braves.
The final game of the day took place between the Braves and Gold Coast West Ham. Here the offense would take center stage. Led by Strikers Allison Kelleher, Charlotte Hayes, and Madison Barbarossa, who all tallied goals, the Braves would go on to a 4-0 victory. The attack pounced on rebounds and worked hard in front of the goal. The strikers couldn’t do it alone though.
Central midfielders Ryan Erster and Maya Harrison would be the vital cogs to bring the ball into the attacking third of the field to feed the attack and when they didn’t have the ball they were getting back to defend brilliantly in transition.
Four different netminders were used in goal on the day and all performed at a high level with some spectacular saves made. A true team effort. Being on the pitch for these young athletes is all that matters. Win or Lose the team was valiant in their effort, respectful of their opponents, and showed a passion and love for the game that is unmatched. The Braves can’t wait to start the season!
